Four games, four losses. On the fifth try, the Papaya Punch Pelicans finally punched back.
The Gorilla Goo Kings came out swinging at Elevated Arena and took a 30-24 lead after one. Papaya Punch answered with a 39-31 second quarter and slipped ahead 63-61 at the break.
The third belonged to the home team. Papaya Punch dropped in 39 again while holding Gorilla Goo to 27, and the scoreboard read 102-88 heading to the fourth.
Gorilla Goo edged the final quarter 32-30, but the hole was too deep. Papaya Punch closed it out 132-120.
The first win of the season lifts Papaya Punch to 1-4, still fifth in the Southwest Division, with a 1-0 edge in the season series. Gorilla Goo falls to 0-5, fifth in the Pacific Division, and is still searching for its first win.
There is no rest on Saturday. Papaya Punch stays home for the Ghost Train Haze Hawks, while Gorilla Goo hits the road to face the Blue Raspberry Grizzlies.

Nines against fives
Line up the jerseys and this Presidential Cannabis League matchup sorts itself by the last digit. Every Gorilla Goo player wears a number ending in 9: the Blunt in 99, the biggest number on the board, the Pre-Roll in 9, the Mini Blunt in 19 and the Mini Pre-Roll in 29.
Papaya Punch plays in fives. A punch has five fingers, so the Blunt wears 5, and the Pre-Roll doubles the digit with 55.
The pack art splits just as cleanly. Gorilla Goo puts a gorilla beside the pack in a mess of glossy purple goo, while Papaya Punch scatters sliced papayas, halved oranges and pink blossoms across a mint sky.
What's inside
Both rosters carry Gold Strain Series patches on New Pack Line boxes, and both are built on flower, live resin and diamonds. Gorilla Goo is marked Hybrid and runs rich and gassy, with reported sour fuel, pine and chocolate. Papaya Punch is marked Sativa and stays tropical, with a fruit and berry profile.
The difference is depth. Papaya Punch stops at two packs, its Blunt at 1.5g and its Pre-Roll at 1g. Gorilla Goo adds two three-packs: mini blunts at 0.7g apiece for 2.1g total, and mini pre-rolls at 0.5g apiece for 1.5g total.
Those extra sizes are about the moment, not a new recipe. A guide to fitting a cannabis format to the occasion weighs session length, sharing and portability before anything else, and treats minis as their own package scale.
The wraps follow their big teammates, too. Arizona's rundown of compact Presidential packs notes that mini blunts keep the tobacco-free hemp wrap and mini pre-rolls stay in paper.
